What is MiCA?

The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is the European Union's comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto-assets. Published as Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, MiCA establishes uniform rules for crypto-asset issuers and service providers across all EU member states.

MiCA covers three main categories of crypto-assets:

  • Asset-referenced tokens (ARTs) – crypto-assets that reference multiple currencies, commodities, or other assets
  • E-money tokens (EMTs) – crypto-assets that reference a single fiat currency
  • Other crypto-assets – including utility tokens

The regulation became fully applicable on December 30, 2024.
